E3 2018: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit Releasing for Free June 26 on Xbox One

Hey everyone! As you may have heard, we’ve just announced The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, which will release June 26 entirely for free on Xbox One.

Dontnod Entertainment has been working on this standalone adventure as well as the yet-to-be-revealed Life is Strange 2 since we released the first game some years ago. That’s right – this isn’t actually Life is Strange 2 but it does contain hints and clues as what Life is Strange 2 will be about… Before we get ahead of ourselves though, here’s what The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is all about:

You’ll be playing as Chris – a regular 10-year-old boy with the kind of vivid imagination only a child his age could have. Chris dreams of being a superhero called Captain Spirit and goes on all sorts of adventures using his imagination. However, on this particular Saturday, something truly extraordinary will happen to him…

As you play Captain Spirit, you will explore the environment as well as interact with and learn about the characters in Chris’ life while also completing your superhero quest list. That could involve assembling the pieces of your costume, tracking down the other members of your superhero squad, taking on evil villains and more. All this activity is interwoven between Chris’ imagination and reality, which will help transport us back to when we were all children of Chris’ age and came up with the same kind of internal storylines and secret dreams using the world around us. The interplay between imagination and reality will also return to fans the Life is Strange narrative style they know and love. This is still a story based on relatable characters facing real world issues.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a standalone demo that contains links to Life is Strange 2, but it is still a significant experience in and of itself. Rather than being a piece of content that was extracted out of another game, Captain Spirit was designed from the very beginning to be played and replayed. There is a breadth of content hidden in Chris’ house and backyard, and odds are you won’t see it all the first time through. We envisioned Captain Spirit to be the perfect entry point for the new characters and story of Life is Strange 2, so don’t worry if you’ve never tried a Life is Strange game before. You can play each game in any order you want and still get the full experience of each, and you can just as well start your journey into this universe with The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit if you’d prefer to. And with it being 100% free, there hasn’t been an easier or better time to jump into the universe of Life is Strange.

Being the game’s Community Manager, I am personally very much looking forward to watching the community uncover Captain Spirit‘s secrets together and pouring through all the speculation as to what Life is Strange 2 might be about and how it connects to Captain Spirit. For many fans in the Life is Strange community, the days and weeks after a release are the most fun. This is the time when gamers come together to propose theories and reveal little Easter eggs that may have been previously missed. We, of course, will be watching and reading everything closely to see if anyone manages to figure it out… If that sounds like fun to you, do make sure you follow Life is Strange on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tumblr, where we will be highlighting some of most intriguing theories and ideas. We’re also on Discord if you want to keep up to date with Life is Strange news there.

We hope that you’re looking forward to playing The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit and can’t wait to hear what your theories might be!
