Chevron Corporation is one of the world’s iconic energy brands. Headquartered in San Ramon, California, its 52,000 employees worldwide work in 162 countries. Since 1879, Chevron has grown to explore, produce, and transport crude oil and natural gas and other energy products; produce petrochemical products; generate power; and develop future energy resources.

Despite its vast size, Chevron insiders see it as a caring community. “We’re invited to operate in 162 countries because we bring so much more to the table than our ability to extract oil and gas. It’s about being a member of the community and giving back—whether it’s in the United States, Nigeria, or the Philippines,” says Jeff Jones, Productivity Champion for Chevron IT. “For end users, it is all about speed—quick and easy access to data whenever and wherever needed. OneDrive helps us be as effective sitting in the middle of the oil field, on an oil rig, or in a coffee shop as I am sitting at my office in Houston,” he says.

OneDrive Project Lead at Chevron Raymond Wong worked to make sure employees had an opportunity to learn about all the unique features of the solution. “A lot of users are surprised that using OneDrive gives them more than simple cloud storage,” he says. “They find that sharing files is much easier, and they’re excited about neat features like Files On-Demand.”

Chevron chose a dual-pronged approach to migration. For employees with sensitive, potentially legally relevant data, Chevron engaged with Microsoft FastTrack, and for users with less complicated needs self-migration turned out to be the most expedient, optimal method.

Deploying OneDrive has created other benefits for Chevron. “Until we had OneDrive, we couldn’t allow people to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on mobile devices because there wasn’t a way for them to safely store files,” says Randall Rasicot, End User Solutions Lifecycle Manager. “But now we use our devices to access the files from OneDrive.  My own ‘ah-ha moment’ came when I was able to store and access marked-up PowerPoint slides on OneNote directly from my phone to give a presentation.”

Security has always been critical for Chevron as it continues to collaborate with third-party business partners. “Security features in OneDrive—like links that expire, the ability to verify recipients, and active monitoring of externally shared files—help us meet this goal to keep those partnerships productive and successful. When everyone was sending email attachments, we didn’t know where the data was going or that it was going out at all. OneDrive with Office 365 helps us gain central visibility and retain control on both data and environment,” says Rasicot.
