Here’s the list of updates to the Azure portal this month:

Virtual Machines

Intune

Let’s look at each of these updates in greater detail.

Virtual Machines

Preview for Azure Spot VM and VMSS

We recently announced the preview of Azure Spot Virtual Machines. You now have access to excess Azure compute capacity at discounts, compared to pay as you go. Spot VMs differ from pay as you go only in price and evictions. They can be evicted at any time if Azure compute needs the capacity. There are 2 types of evictions: capacity only and price or capacity, where you can set a maximum price you are willing to pay for a single VM instance.

Ideal workloads that are suited for Spot Virtual Machines include (not necessarily limited to) the following:

  • Batch jobs
  • Test and Development
  • Workloads that can sustain and/or recover from interruptions
  • Stateless applications that can use Spot Virtual Machines to scale out, opportunistically saving cost
  • Short-lived jobs which can easily be run again if the Virtual Machine is evicted

This preview replaces the preview of Azure low-priority Virtual Machines on scale sets. You can find additional information about Azure Spot in our documentation or the blog post. For pricing, refer to the Azure Spot page on Azure.com.

  3. Select an eviction type: capacity only (default) or price or capacity
    1. If capacity only, click change size under the Size field to see the updated Azure Spot prices in USD/hour. Select a size and continue in the VM create process as normal
    2. If price or capacity, click change size under the Size field to see the updated Azure Spot prices in USD/hour. Enter a maximum price that is greater than the current Azure Spot price. Continue in the VM create process as normal
