Improve cost savings with the new Azure Virtual Machine Offerings

The Azure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) portfolio continues to expand to help increase the cost efficiency for your workloads. This week at Microsoft Ignite, we announced several important additions to our Azure IaaS portfolio.

As customers expand the range of workloads they bring to the cloud, we broaden the Azure portfolio to support and meet customer requirements.

 

What’s new

We are making available new Azure Virtual Machines that deliver better price-performance for general purpose and memory-intensive workloads than our previous VM generations. This week we announced the following new VM offerings:

  • New AMD-based Virtual Machines: The availability of the new general purpose and memory-optimized Azure Virtual Machines based on the 3rd generation AMD EPYCTM 7763v (Milan) that can achieve a boosted maximum frequency of 3.7GHz.

The new Dasv5 and Easv5 VM sizes do not include local temporary disk. These VM families offer a lower price of entry and better cost efficiency for stateless workloads. If you are currently using The new sizes support Standard HDDs, Standard SSDs, Premium SSDs, or Ultra Disk persistent disks.

 

The new Dadsv5 and Eadsv5 VM sizes include fast, larger local SSD storage and are designed for applications that benefit from low latency, high-speed local storage, such as applications that require fast reads and writes to temporary storage or applications that require temporary storage for caches or temporary files. These new VM sizes offer 50 percent larger local storage, as well as better local disk IOPS for both Read and Write operations compared to the Dasv4 or Easv4 VM sizes with Generation 2 VMs. The new sizes support standard HDD, standard SSDs, premium SSDs, or ultra-SSD persistent disks. The general purpose Dadsv5 VM sizes provide a good balance of memory –to vCPU performance, with up to 96 vCPUs and 384 GiB of RAM, and also include local SSD storage up to 3,600 GiB. The memory-optimized Eadsv5 VM sizes feature a high memory-to-CPU ratio, with up to 96 vCPUs and 672 GiB of RAM, and also include local SSD storage up to 3,600 GiB.

 

The new Dasv5 and Easv5 VM sizes are available today in West US 2, West Europe and East US.

  • New Intel-based Virtual Machines:

The general Availability of the new general purpose and memory-optimized Azure Virtual Machines based on the 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Platinum 8370C (Ice Lake) processor in a hyper-threaded configuration. This custom processor can reach an all core Turbo clock speed of up to 3.5GHz and features Intel® Turbo Boost Technology 2.0Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions 512 (Intel® AVX-512) and Intel® Deep Learning Boost.

In addition to our preview region of East US 2, you can now access the Dv5/Ev5-series VMs in East US, East US 2 EUAP, West US, West US 2, Central US, North Europe, and West Europe.  We will be adding more regions and Availability Zones through the rest of this year and into 2022.  Please check with us online periodically for additional availability.

The new Dv5/Dsv5 and Ev5/Esv5 VM sizes are new offerings that do not include local temporary disk. These VM families offer a lower price of entry and better cost efficiency for stateless workloads. If you are currently using The Dv5/Dsv5 virtual machines offer a combination of vCPUs and memory able to meet the requirements associated with most enterprise workloads, such as small-to-medium databases, low-to-medium traffic web servers, application servers and more.  The Ev5/Esv5 virtual machines are ideal for memory-intensive enterprise applications, relational database servers, and in-memory analytics workloads.

 

  • The new general purpose Dv5 VMs provide a good balance of memory to vCPU performance, with up to 96 vCPUs and 384 GiB of RAM. The sizes support Standard SSDs and Standard HDDs persistent disk storage.

We are also excited to announce the Preview of the new memory optimized Ebsv5 and Ebdsv5 VM series, which deliver higher remote storage performance than the Ev4 VM series. These new VMs offer up to 120,000 IOPS and 4,000 MBps of remote disk storage throughput.

The increased remote storage performance of these VMs is ideal for storage-throughput-intensive workloads, such as relational databases and data analytics applications. These VM series provides a 300% increase in remote storage performance of data-intensive workloads compared to prior VM generations. The new VMs help consolidate existing workloads on fewer VMs or smaller VM sizes while achieving potential cost savings. You can attach Premium SSDs and Ultra Disk SSDs to these VMs.
