With 2018 behind us, we here at Xbox Wire decided that now would be the perfect time to start looking ahead to some of the big games coming out in 2019. There are already a lot of them on the books, many of which will be coming out during the first few months of the year. While there’s already a decent amount of info on these titles, we’ve found that it can be tough to figure out details with all of the information spread out across the web. So, with that in mind, we’ll be spending the rest of the year taking a closer look at some of 2019’s biggest games and pulling together as much info as we can into one place. Today, we look at From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Isn’t this from the Dark Souls people?
Yes, but that doesn’t mean Sekiro is another doomed dalliance with death between distant bonfires. In fact, before they became the masters of the beloved GrimSad genre, the visionary developers at From Software honed their skills in all manner of action and horror games like Otogi: Myth of Demons and Ninja Blade. Even that’s somewhat of a reductionist view of their body-filled body of work (which also includes the mech-mashing Armored Core series). It seems safe to say Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice comes from the creepy, mythological sword swingery department of From Software.
So… I’m hearing it’s going to be hard.
Oh, almost certainly. But this time you’re in 16th Century Japan, embroiled in a war between states and lords and huge, grotesque ogres. You’re a covert agent and protector of royalty, known as the “one-armed wolf,” because *checks notes* you have one arm.
That checks out?
Well, the other arm is a destructive prosthetic device that complements your sword with grappling hooks, spring-launched axes and other attachments that give you the upper hand in smashing disgusting monsters!
What about an attachment that says “Whoa whoa whoa, nice blade you have there!”
That would be a destructive prosthetic device that compliments your sword.
Is this the year of the destructive prosthetic arm?
Let’s say this could be the year of From Software, in which they break out of our expectations and dive into a fast-paced clash against creepy fiends in a rich, historically tinged and twisted world. And we’ve heard there’ll be a bit of a twist when you die.
I was going to ask about that! Can you meet your demise in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice?
Yes.
How many times?
At least… twice? Are you asking what the upward limit of a shadow-related death is?
I think so?
That’s a mystery From Software is saving for later.
And when is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice coming out, exactly?
March 22, 2019.
Will Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice be enhanced for Xbox One X?
Yup.
Could a shadow… die thrice?
Who knows?
