Invitation for private preview – new data-import features in Viva Insights

This post has been republished via RSS; it originally appeared at: Microsoft Tech Community - Latest Blogs - .

We’re excited to announce development on two new data-import features for Viva Insights. To get your feedback, we’d like to invite you to join our private previews.

What are these features?

Both features bring data into the advanced insights app from other sources and allow that data to refresh periodically. The first feature imports data from any organizational data source. We’ll provide sample code and technical documentation to connect to the Viva Insights API. The second feature imports data from Workday. You can sign up to preview one or both.

What kind of benefit do these features offer?

These features can help your data stay current over time. Instead of you manually uploading a .csv file at a set cadence, the imports send data to Viva Insights at the frequency you pick. When analysts run queries or managers and leaders view insights, they’ll see the most up-to-date data based on your import frequency.

The data sent through these imports includes all required and reserved optional fields for Viva Insights—for example, PersonId, ManagerId, Organization, and Layer. For a complete list of required and reserved optional fields, check out our documentation. Custom fields aren’t supported for this private preview, but you’ll be able to import them in later releases.

How does Viva Insights import data?

For the first feature (data import from any organizational data source) the source system exports organizational data to the Viva Insights API, and Viva Insights brings that data into the advanced insights app. You’ll need to create an app—for example, a PowerShell script—that connects your data source to the API. We’ll provide sample code and technical documentation for this process.

For the second feature (data import from Workday), you provide Workday credentials within the advanced insights app, and Viva Insights pulls your data directly from Workday.

Are there any prerequisites?

Yes. You’ll need to:

  • Have a Viva Insights license. If you’re previewing the Workday import feature, you’ll also need a Workday license.
  • Be on the new advanced insights platform (not Workplace Analytics).
  • Make sure your organization has at least 500 people with a Viva Insights license.

Who from my organization will need to be involved?

To set up the first feature (data import from any organizational data source), you’ll need to involve these roles:

  • Insights Administrator
  • Microsoft 365 global admin
  • Data source admin

To set up the second feature (data import from Workday), you’ll need to involve these roles:

  • Insights Administrator
  • Workday admin

When will these private previews happen?

We’ve already started private preview for the first feature (data import from any organizational data source). We’re aiming to start our private preview for the second feature (data import from Workday) this month.

What would my commitment to the private preview look like?

For this program, we’d expect you to commit time and resources to:

  • Setting up and trying out the integration. This process would involve one or two 30-minute sessions.
  • If you’re using the first feature (data import from any organizational data source), creating an app to connect to the Viva Insights API.
  • Providing feedback to the product team during one 30-minute session.
