Delivering VMware nested virtualization for Azure Kubernetes Service Edge Essentials

This post has been republished via RSS; it originally appeared at: New blog articles in Microsoft Community Hub.

Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) Edge Essentials provides a powerful solution for organizations looking to run containerized workloads on edge devices. With AKS Edge Essentials, you can deploy cloud-native workloads directly onto your edge devices, bringing the power of the cloud to your business no matter where you are. This allows you to quickly respond to changing conditions and reduce bandwidth costs, all while maintaining the flexibility and agility of containerized workloads and cloud-native technologies.

By bringing the best of Windows and Linux together, AKS Edge Essentials enables new capabilities while leveraging existing Windows infrastructure and application investments. Running Kubernetes with both Windows and Linux containers on Windows devices enables you to do more with on-premises infrastructure, reducing the overhead and cost of separate devices for different applications.

AKS Edge Essentials doesn't require extensive Linux or Kubernetes knowledge and utilizes familiar Windows tools to manage your Kubernetes cluster, workloads, and base OS. Lastly, the entire solution is maintained and kept up to date by Microsoft.

What about running on virtualized environments?

A lot of customers are opting to deploy AKS Edge Essentials on virtualized environments, such as a local virtual machine using Hyper-V or Azure Virtual Machines. And now Windows virtual machines running on top of VMware ESXi 7.0 and 8.0 are also supported. This adds VMware to the list of options for customers looking to deploy AKS Edge Essentials on production environments with virtualized infrastructure.
