The Journey of Yooka-Laylee, Available April 11 on Xbox One

Hello! We’re Playtonic Games, a small team of veterans who’ve rustled up the colorful adventure Yooka-Laylee, an open-world platformer inspired by the genre classics many of our developers helped create!

Almost two years since our crowdfunding campaign, it’s an amazing feeling to finally deliver our game to fans on Xbox One. The journey up to this point has been a proverbial minecart ride, from the twilight days when we had to put everything on the line for an office the size of a gents’ toilet, to the incredible, humbling support of our backers and smashing the UK games Kickstarter record. Yooka-Laylee’s construction has been an incredible experience and we hope it delivers everything our backers and fans hoped from an old-school 3D platformer!

Using an arsenal of special moves, our heroes Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the wisecracking bat with the big nose) tackle a huge variety of puzzles and platforming challenges in their search for Pagies, the golden bounty used to unlock (and expand) new worlds, each jammed to the gills with oddball characters, hulking bosses, minecart challenges, arcade games, quiz shows, multiplayer games… and much more!

With Yooka-Laylee, our intention was to deliver an adventure that booth rekindled the glory days of the 3D platformer in look and feel – which wasn’t hard, since we have the same artists and composers behind many classics on our team – while innovating within the core gameplay by doubling down on the refreshing freedom those games gave to players.

We wanted to set players free to explore huge platforming playgrounds at their own pace, with no giant mini-map hogging the screen or waypoint arrow ordering them along a path. We hope players feel even more empowered by the many new features we’ve introduced, such as the ability to purchase moves with freedom, Tonics which modify gameplay to fit your style, and worlds which you can choose to expand in to even larger, more complex playgrounds.

As well as pleasing the veteran fans, it would be fantastic if Yooka-Laylee could be the game to inspire a whole new audience of gamers to discover platforming classics. Because there really hasn’t been a game like this for a very long time; a freeform, sandbox style of platforming where the exploration and adventure is just as important as the hop ‘n’ jumps. We love this kind of game and we hope you do too.

Yooka-Laylee will be available in digital and physical flavors from all participating stores worldwide on April 11 and from the Xbox One Store. We hope you enjoy the fantastical worlds, oddball characters, and excellent dad jokes as much as we did creating them!
