We’re happy to introduce a number of new security features available for video content in Microsoft 365. These features are available to customers using Stream (on SharePoint), the enterprise video solution included with Microsoft 365. Let’s take a look at the robust video protection and content security available for in Microsoft 365.1

Block the download of Teams meeting recordings from SharePoint or OneDrive

You can block the download of Teams meeting recording files from SharePoint or OneDrive via SharePoint Online Management Shell. This can help your organization reduce the risk of accidental data loss. When enabled, end-users have browser-only access to play the meeting recordings but no ability to download, sync files or access them through apps. Learn more.

Audit logs for video activities

Stream (on SharePoint) gives you access to auditing solutions from Microsoft Purview. These solutions empower you to swiftly respond to security events, conduct forensic investigations, and meet compliance obligations. The unified audit log captures an extensive range of user and admin operations across Microsoft 365 services, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The audit logs for Stream (on SharePoint) categorize video-related activities under file and page actions. This includes vital actions such as video creation, file and metadata modifications, deletion, downloading, viewing, sharing, commenting, caption or transcript uploads, and custom thumbnail uploads. Visibility into these activities gives you robust oversight of video content within your organization.

Data lifecycle management - retain and delete with precision

Video file retention and deletion are now simple thanks to Microsoft Purview's Data Lifecycle Management. Retention labels and policies work across all of Microsoft 365.

You can now keep or delete videos through retention labels via OneDrive or SharePoint.

Video files, just like any other file stored in SharePoint, can be managed using retention policies and labels.

Data loss prevention - proactively safeguard your videos

The unintentional sharing of sensitive information can be damaging to an organization. Microsoft Purview's Data Loss Prevention (DLP) feature offers protection against accidental or intentional sharing of sensitive data, both within and outside your organization.

Administrators can define sensitive information types, specify monitoring locations, set conditions for policy application, and determine appropriate actions when a match is found. Examples of actions include blocking access for people outside of the organization or for everyone, and showing tool tips to notify users that the content is being protected.

When it comes to video content, DLP alerts are triggered by keywords in the title, transcript, and other video metadata. DLP rule conditions can be set to search for file extension, document property values, or even specific content creators. Users receive timely notifications through tooltips displayed in OneDrive or SharePoint, ensuring immediate awareness and proactive prevention.

eDiscovery - streamlined search and export for videos

Efficient eDiscovery processes are essential for legal, regulatory, and business purposes. Microsoft Purview offers powerful eDiscovery solutions that enable you to search for video data across OneDrive and SharePoint. Search results can be conveniently exported for analysis and review.

The eDiscovery capabilities for Stream (on SharePoint) encompass meeting recording and video search, playback, and export. Administrators can identify and collect video files by searching specific SharePoint or OneDrive locations, or by searching keywords in video metadata such as titles, descriptions, transcripts or chapters. Now organizations can seamlessly conduct comprehensive reviews and exports of videos and meeting recordings.

Coming Soon

The following features are in developement and will help further secure video when available

Communications compliance - detecting inappropriate content

Microsoft Purview's Communication Compliance tool helps detect, capture, and remediate inappropriate communications. We are soon making Compliant Teams Meetings publicly available. This tool will let organizations detect regulatory and business conduct violations, improper sharing of sensitive information, adult content, and harassment found in the transcript of Teams meeting recordings.

Communiations Compliance won’t be available for regular video files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.

Sensitivity labels for video

Sensitivity labels are a foundational feature that allow you to define protection actions. Currently, sensitivity labels are not supported for video files within Microsoft 365. We acknowledge the importance of this capability and we’re actively exploring avenues to support sensitivity labels for video content in the future.

Taken together these new capabilities, available for Stream (on SharePoint), add comprehensive protection to the secure storage you get with Microsoft 365, providing you with peace of mind and unparalleled control over your video content. As always, we welcome your feedback. Feel free to comment below or share ideas in the Stream feedback portal.
